Recent California Election: a Cash Cow Tipping Contest

Author: John A Thomas

Woops, my cynical prediction may have actually come true. The inmates are running the asylum in California. The recent California special election was completely controlled and the outcome dictated by government employees. They may work for all of us, but they also get to approve what goes into law.

About ten years ago, I had an epiphany. I noticed that real jobs kept disappearing and government jobs just kept on growing. What I realized was... groups of motivated voters win elections and money is the best motivator of all. So I thought, ""When government gets big enough, won't government workers turn out in droves to protect their turf, and start voting, unchecked, for bigger, better government?""

I think that day may have arrived. The most motivated voters in California are definitely those who stand to make or protect a buck. As the size of government grew, government workers, contractors, and their family members turn out and regularly vote in favor of themselves, and why not?

The recent California election was decided by a strong turn-out by unions who were mad at the governor for trying to institute a few toothless reforms. The reforms seemed so mild that the average voter couldn't see how they would help. Since most voters were not excited, they didn't show up at the polls.

The cheerleader for the defeat of the reform initiatives was California Teachers Assn. President Barbara Kerr who joined with other unions to pump $100-million into defeating Schwarzenegger's initiatives. She easily out-wasted the governor who she says ""wasted $50 million"" in calling the election.

She also said ""he does not have the courage to apologize"". Apologize for what? He was elected as a reformer, we just didn't realize how hard it would be, or should I say, how bad he would be at doing it. As a parent, I wish she would apologize for taking $50 million dollars out of the teacher's pockets and spending it on thousands of marathon ads that nobody watched.

The direct spending on the election and election advertising was well in excess of $300 million dollars. The cost disturbs me but what I really can't get over is the evidence it gives me that the citizens of Californian have lost the ability to govern. We never talk about or vote on big changes, but we spend enormous amounts of energy fighting over small, incremental improvements in provision serving special interest.

In addition to this election, here are some additional examples. When the 2000 energy crisis showed the real incompetence of the legislature, nobody was fired. The blame was shifted to the Fed. When the budget crisis rose in 2003, Californians fired their governor. They were especially incensed as he continued to honor his reelection commitments to special interests while the state was in crisis. But, he was not the only offender, and the electorate did not fire a single incumbent member in the State Legislature; not one, go figure?

Californians also rejected a proposition to change the way political boundaries are drawn. The legislature raised several million to crush this move. They like it the way it is now - nice and predictable. The legislature has drawn district lines in a way that completely eliminates contestable elections. If you get nominated by the controlling party, you always get elected. If you are an incumbent, you always get re-elected.

We have a constitution that demands a balanced budget, yet there hasn't been one in years and none are on the horizon. We put no energy into fixing a broken budgeting process, yet we spend billions on legitimizing bookkeeping tricks to keep the state afloat for another year.

Californian's replaced their governor with Schwarzenegger, when they got angry,. But in this recent election, the unions were easily able to defeat his mild reforms. Why? Because there is more of them than we realized, and perhaps he didn't tackle the states problem's in any meaningful way. It seems like he got advice from his own special interests, and he got bad advice.

He asked voters to change rules for the political use of public employee union dues, and teacher tenure - as if any of these really would solve the state's problems.

I am a member of a very small minority. I don't belong to any of the powerful special interest groups currently buying favorable state laws. Will I ever again see a piece of legislation that serves the general good of the state?

Aw come on, teachers, police, firefighters, gun-owner, casinos, etc.; how about throwing us a bone before you tip the cow over. How about doing a little something to fix our schools. Or perhaps we could improve a few roads, patch up the health care system, or make a dent in our border issues.

Contractor General Liability Insurance In California

Author: Victor A.

Under a Contractor General Liability insurance in California, the insurer is obligated to pay the legal costs of a business in a covered liability claim or lawsuit. Covered liability claims include bodily injury, property damage, personal injury and advertising injury (damage from slander or false advertising). The insurance company also covers compensatory and general damages. Punitive damages aren't covered under Contractor General Liability insurance policies because they are considered punishment for intentional acts.

In today's litigious society, even small accidents can result in large lawsuits. That's why Contractor General Liability insurance in California, along with property and worker's compensation insurance is essential for business whether small or large. Contractor General Liability insurance in California protects the assets of a business when it is sued for something it did or didn't do to cause an injury or property damage.

Contractor General Liability insurance in California can be purchased separately or as part of a business-owner's policy (BOP). A BOP bundles property and liability insurance into one policy; however, the liability coverage limits are generally pretty low. Businesses that need more coverage usually purchase liability insurance as a separate policy. The amount of coverage a business needs depends on a couple factors. First of all is perceived risk. Business owners should first consider the amount of risk associated with their business. For example, a business that manufactures heavy machinery is at a greater risk of being sued than a company that manufactures linens and would therefore need more liability insurance. A second factor is the state in which you operate. Businesses that operate in states with a history of awarding high damage amounts to plaintiffs typically need to carry liability insurance with higher coverage limits. An insurance broker can offer guidance in this area.

Taking precautions before an accident can help keep your liability and your insurance rates down. All businesses can take certain steps to lower the chance of a liability insurance claim. For example you can set a high standard for product quality control.

Make sure all company records are complete and up to date. Be sure employees are properly trained. Get safety tips for your type of business from your insurance company. The link below is a suggested site for more information on Contractor General Liability insurance in California.

Your Introduction To Palm Springs, California

Author: DesertOnline.com

Palm Springs, California is a two-hour drive approximately 100 miles east of the city of Los Angeles in beautiful Riverside County. First inhabited by the Cahill Indians, the name Palm Springs comes from the Indian phrase meaning ""The Palm Of God's Hand"". By 1950, Palm Springs became a getaway resort for the rich and famous. As of the year 2,000, almost 43,000 people resided in this lush area. In the wintertime, this number jumps to almost 75,000 people, with around 27,000 people living in second vacation homes.

Palm Springs lies in the California Desert on the western edge of the Coachella Valley. At 487 feet above sea level and covering 96 square miles, it offers a beautiful view of the impressive Mt. San Jacinto. In addition to natural landmarks, the city offers it's residents an almost endless number of activities including tennis courts, golf courses, an Olympic sized pool, a dog park, a water park, and trails of all kinds (including bike routes and horseback trails). Palm Springs even has a baseball stadium. Palm Springs is also noted for it's vast city library and museums.

In addition to these activities, Palm Springs also offers visitors the chance to visit boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, restaurants, and night clubs.

Palm Springs has an unusually warm, dry climate. This is because it is surrounded by the San Jacinto Mountains on the west, the Santa Rosa mountains on the south, and the Little San Bernadino mountains to the north. Although temperatures rise above 100 in the summer, you will still remain comfortable due to the low humidity.

One of the outstanding activities offered by Palm Springs is golf. Palm Springs offers over 30 different golf courses spread throughout it's vast acreage. It attracts the most prestigious golfers in the world, including Jack Nicklaus. In fact, Palm Springs is the home of the PGA West Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course. This course is the home of the PGA 's Tour Qualifying School. The course is names as one of Golf Magazine's top 100 golf courses you can play. Other fabulous courses you can try out are the PGA West TCP Stadium Course, Silver Rock Resort (designed by Arnold Palmer), the Palm Desert Resort Country Club, and the Desert Princess Country Club. As you can see, Palm Springs hosts the best of the best when it comes to golf.

When you have had your fill of golf (or if golf is not your thing), Palm Springs offers a multitude of fun, unique activities for you to enjoy. If you feel like taking to the sky, you can enjoy a ride in a colorful hot air balloon, allowing you to view the beautiful vistas of California. For a little more excitement, you can ride in a classic biplane or warbird of the 20's or 40's. Imagine the thrill of aerobatic flying with a naval pilot at the controls.

If the sky isn't your cup of tea, then you can take advantage of the Coachella Valley and the surrounding area. You may wish to take nature hikes in the valley, or take a ride on the breathtaking Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The tramway is a suspended cable car with a 15-minute ride across the valley each way. If you decide to stay on the ground, horse riding and jeep tours are available.

Palm Springs is a showplace retreat for people of all walks of life. It offers something for everyone, from visitors from other countries, to those just wanting to get away for a while. It offers breathtaking views, as well as the beauty of the city itself.
